Dundee Proud! When I drive around the Dundee community and see yard signs that support our school programs or simply state "Go Scots!" it makes me very proud to be a member of a community that is devoted to our school! I want to take this opportunity to welcome you to the 2017-2018 school year.  For many of you, it is “welcome back.”  For our new students/families, it is a brand new journey filled with excitement and success.  To all of you, WELCOME!    Our Mission is to provide a safe and orderly environment that fosters positive, lifelong learning experiences and respect for individual differences.  We have a number of programs in place for our students.  Our staff is very supportive and always has the needs of our students in mind.  Dundee Central School district prides itself on assisting each child on an individual basis reach their fullest potential. We have an outstanding staff that possesses the essential skills needed to prepare our students for the 21st century and beyond. Academic preparation and personal development are the two purposes of education.  With that being said, school should also be a fun place for children to learn and grow.  We want your child to be happy and successful at Dundee Central School and believe that you play a key role.  That role is to continually show interest in and support for your child.  The child who knows that his or her family is interested in and supports the school program will almost always have fewer problems in school and will enjoy greater success. As with any school year, communication is the key to success. It is our hope to enhance communication between your home and school in order to ensure that we always have a good parent/teacher/school relationship. There are many ways to keep in touch, as well as to keep up to date on all that is going on at DCS in any given day, week or month. Here are a few tools to use to increase your communication with DCS:  School Calendar of Events - Information on scheduled events, important school policies, school district phone numbers, website address and a host of other information can all be found in the events calendar. A school calendar will be mailed to each residence.   Website -Here you will find valuable up to date information regarding school events, cancellations, useful links, district policies, and community information. E-mail - This is a great way to stay in touch and to receive answers to questions. Contact information can be found on the district website. Phone - The school can be contacted directly by phoning 607-243-5533. Other Forms of Communications - District newsletters, classroom newsletters, the electronic welcome sign, progress reports, report cards, parent teacher conferences, teacher web pages, Open House, are all other examples of how to communicate effectively with our district. Even though we are just embarking on a new school year I’d like to mention how extremely proud of our staff and teachers I am. The facilities and buildings look great, and on the first day of school, you can never tell that students just arrived back from summer vacation. There is Common Core learning and hands-on activities occurring on the every day starting with the very first   Our elementary students will be participating in many back to school activities and in just a few weeks our junior/senior high students will be involved in spirit week which culminates with a full blown maroon and white day where all students and staff are decked out in school colors. It's great to be Dundee! I would like to ask for your help early, by inviting you to become an active member at our school. Please look for future invitations in the District Newsletters for opportunities to serve on various committees or information surrounding numerous school events and activities to attend. Your participation in these events will help create special memories for both you and your child.  Nothing but success for DCS!

In today’s busy fast paced world it can be often difficult to take moment to offer assistance and even more difficult to take notice of others that are offering assistance, support, encouragement or completing a random act of kindness. A few weeks ago, I was purchasing my favorite beverage from Dunkin Doughnuts and when I arrived at the casher to pay for my order, I was pleasantly surprised when I was informed that the person in front of me had already paid for my item.  Feeling so grateful, I instantly told the cashier I would pay for the order for the person behind me. These random acts of kindness are what make the world we live in a better place and what makes DCS such a special place. Each day I observe our students and staff helping one another, showing kindness without giving it a second thought. Older students stopping to help younger students on and off the bus, when someone drops a paper or their books there are always two or more people bending down retrieving the items quickly for the individual who dropped them. Teachers staying after offering assistance and support to students who need just a little extra support and recently I can’t even begin to articulate all of the acts of kindness surrounding the musical production Guys and Dolls.  I am very pleased to say that DCS is a place to be proud of! A fellow colleague shared with me a poem by the late child poet Mattie Stepanek that says: “When one person is thoughtful to another, the thoughtfulness gets carried on and on. It is like a river of kindness, once blocked by rocks, that is suddenly opened by a single person’s kind thought or act.” As educators, as family and community members, our job isn’t just to teach skills, but it’s to lead by example. I think we are human beings first and educators second, so we owe it to ourselves and each other to be kind to one another. Simple acts of kindness, whether they are a kind word or a smile, can start in the home or the school and expand to the rest of our area and the world. I’ve seen the difference kindness makes when it comes to a student who is struggling or a colleague who is having a bad day. Being kind means offering a compassionate point a view, a shoulder to cry on, or just being supportive of someone's feelings. In my experience I’ve seen that kindness is contagious, and an environment brimming with thoughtfulness is a positive one. Together, we can achieve great things; one kind act and one place at a time.

Please join us! Your comments and questions are welcomed! This is a great opportunity to gain an in depth knowledge and understanding of the process and most importantly the "why" and the "what" of the work. We are very happy to welcome back our students and families for the start of a new school year! The first day brings an abundance of excitement, everyone is excited about meeting their new teachers and classmates, learning new lessons, and experiencing continued growth through education. I truly believe that quality education is the key to unlock the true potential for any community. We have no doubt that under the amazing leadership of our faculty and staffs, DCS students will be fully prepared to enter the world as critical  thinkers and change makers! As a staff, we are confident that DCS will challenge our students academically and socially. Our focus as a staff this year will be to continue to develop personalized learning pathways for all students. Furthering our work on the development and implementation of personalized pathways using a blended learning model across all the curriculums, to foster and support student learning. This year we will also be fully implementing a 1;1 initiative for all students prekindergarten through twelfth grade and we welcome the addition of an after school program that is free of charge and offers nightly transportation home if needed. Forging a strong relationship between the school and home is beneficial to student performance and academic growth.
